How to treat a cold (runny nose, cough, congestion, fever, etc)?:
Increase fluids, rest, use tylenol every 4 hours or Motrin every 6 hours, throat lozenges to keep the throat lubricated, and salt water gargles.
Consuming fluids is more important than eating food.
Is it really a bacterial sinus infection?:
Probably NOT! Most likely it is a viral illness (ie cold virus) and you do NOT need antibiotics. Follow the advice above.
What to do if I am vomiting or have diarrhea?:
Stay at HOME! Don't spread it!
Push fluids (water, 7up, or gatorade)- a shot glass full (15-30cc) every 15-20 minutes; despite the vomitting some of the fluids DOES get absorbed.
The biggest worry is dehydration from:
decreased fluid intake and fluid loss.
IF you are NOT urinating at least 4 times per day or if symptoms worsen, then go to the ER for further evaluation and treatment!
Sprains
Rest, Ice for 20minutes, 3 times per day, and use ibuprofen 3 times per day with food. Follow up in the office if not better in 2 weeks.
Muscle Strains
Apply heating pad for 20 minutes , 3 times per day. Massage and then stretch after heating. Use ibuprofen 3 times per day with food. Follow up if not better by 2 weeks.
